The Greenwich Hotel

The Greenwich Hotel is a perfect blend of luxury, craftsmanship, and comfort – a true hidden gem in the heart of New York City.

During my stay at The Greenwich Hotel, member of the Leading Hotels of the World, I experienced firsthand why it is regarded as one of New York City’s most iconic hotels. Nestled in the charming cobblestone streets of TriBeCa, the hotel has a special place in the hearts of both visitors and locals alike. Opened in 2008 by Ira Drukier and Robert DeNiro, along with their partners Richard Born and Raphael De Niro, The Greenwich is a true testament to old-world craftsmanship. I was captivated by the handmade details and the artistry that went into the design, featuring materials from talented artisans across the globe. The warm, layered environment made me feel immediately at home, with natural materials adding to its beauty.

The hotel’s common areas, starting with the lobby, set the tone for craftsmanship throughout the property. I loved sipping my morning coffee while admiring the leaded glass windows and beams of reclaimed oak that created such a cozy atmosphere. Just around the corner, I found the Drawing Room, where I could sink into velvet and leather couches to enjoy an evening cocktail by the wood-burning fireplace. With 12-foot ceilings and beautifully crafted bookshelves, the Drawing Room truly made me feel as though I could relax and settle in. The antique mirrored glass and French doors led to a lush courtyard where I dined beneath latticed vines, enjoying a peaceful moment in the midst of Manhattan’s hustle and bustle.

The hotel’s 73 unique rooms, each with their own distinct design, were a highlight of my stay. The blend of cultural influences in the furnishings – from hand-loomed Tibetan silk rugs to Moroccan tile patterns – created an eclectic yet harmonious feel. The hand-made Italian terracotta floors and reclaimed wood details added a warmth and authenticity that I found captivating. I stayed in one of their luxurious suites, but I also toured the two duplex penthouses: The Greenwich and The North Moore. Both were designed as artist ateliers with 30-foot skylights, full kitchens, stone fireplaces, and stunning details throughout. It was easy to imagine how these spaces could accommodate up to five bedrooms for larger groups.

On the top floor, I was truly amazed by the 6,800-square-foot TriBeCa Penthouse, a masterpiece designed by Axel Vervoordt and Tatsuro Miki. The Japanese Wabi aesthetic brought a serene, meditative quality to the minimalist space. With its open floor plan, three fireplaces, and multi-leveled terrace complete with lush gardens, a spa pool, and even a wood-burning fireplace, the penthouse felt like an urban oasis.

Dining at Locanda Verde, the hotel’s restaurant and bar, was another unforgettable experience. Led by renowned chef Andrew Carmellini, the restaurant offered soul-satisfying Italian dishes like duck sausage orecchiette and lamb pappardelle bolognese. The casual neighborhood taverna atmosphere made it a perfect spot to enjoy meals throughout the day, and the 24-hour room service was a lovely touch.

I also took advantage of the Shibui Spa, a true haven of relaxation. Exclusively available to hotel guests, the spa’s lantern-lit swimming pool, housed beneath the roof of a 250-year-old reconstructed Japanese farmhouse, was one of the most serene spots I’ve ever encountered. With five treatment rooms, including a shiatsu room and a traditional Japanese bathing room, I felt completely rejuvenated after my time there.

Even the fitness room at The Greenwich Hotel impressed me. Spanning over 1,000 square feet, it was designed with the same attention to detail as the rest of the hotel, incorporating old hemlock floors and serene lighting, while also offering state-of-the-art equipment.

Overall, my stay at The Greenwich Hotel was a perfect blend of luxury, craftsmanship, and comfort – a true hidden gem in the heart of New York City.
