The Heartbeat of Artistry: Backstage at Fashion Freak Show by Jean Paul Gaultier

Light and sound technicians fine-tune every detail of the show, two hours before the doors open. Watch out!

Diving into the backstage world of Jean Paul Gaultier’s “Fashion Freak Show” is to immerse oneself in a whirlwind of creativity and emotion. From the hustle and bustle of the dancers to the whisper of fabric brushing against skin, every moment is infused with the passion and commitment that define this unique spectacle.

Amidst the controlled chaos, reigns the organization of a carefully curated artistic and technical team. Dressers and seamstresses work tirelessly, arranging costumes in order of appearance and character. Feathers, stress, leather… an endless array of garments fills practically every room of the venue. Wig shelves turn fantasy into reality. Light and sound technicians fine-tune every detail of the show, two hours before the doors open. Watch out! Everyone tries to avoid the long runway recreated with red caramel carpet to keep it pristine.

In every corner, rehearsals of the choreography created by Marion Motin and staged by Tonie Marshall are observed. The rule is to ensure that every moment is a memorable theatrical experience.

As we observe from the shadows, we capture fleeting moments of beauty and preparation. Descending into the dressing rooms, we encounter the authentic style that defines each dancer’s identity. I admire pieces like Leon’s Margiela loafers, Pablo’s Scottish tartan miniskirt, Jonathon’s vintage chain watch paired with black cowboy boots and a CK tracksuit… Amelye moves from dressing room to dressing room, and Anouk finishes perfecting her makeup as the mistress of ceremonies alongside Demi. Every gesture, every sigh, is a celebration of the passion that drives these artists to give their best every night.

Enchanted by the atmosphere behind the scenes, Cooper (another dancer) acts as a steward, showing us his wardrobe for the show. We manage to capture part of the moment. Seeing him in a full Gaultier look of gabardine fabric with denim details, or his defiant final act shield, a white tulle face.

And so, as the curtain rises and the lights dim, we prepare to capture the magic unfolding before our eyes. Because in “Fashion Freak Show,” fashion becomes art, history becomes inspiration, and creativity becomes a transformative experience. A piece of Paris from the ateliers and Folies Bergère finds its place in the Teatro Coliseum of Barcelona.

The time to open the doors approaches, announced by the speakers counting down the remaining minutes. It seems that the delicate calm begins to stir.

Footsteps become strides. The sound of clothes rack wheels echoes like a locomotive.

A reminder that fashion is more than just fabrics and seams; it is a reflection of humanity in all its beauty and complexity.

Silence is requested, concentration is asked for. Shhh! The show begins.
